People are getting ready for the new week and would rather not be hung over at work on Monday morning. And if you’re not fond of crowds, try Tuesday or Wednesday night. It’s easier to get a good table at the bar, live bands are often playing, and everyone is more laid-back. Some clubs are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday but bars won’t be in a hurry to see you leave. To be on the safe side, look for a well-lit ATM, preferably at a bank. There’s a reason for Sofia to be safer than most big cities. On one hand, it’s still much less popular to visit than cities like Paris, Rome or Berlin. Fewer visitors mean it’s less attractive to petty crime. Retro Club Gramophone (ul. Budapeshta 6, Sofia) Open Thursday to Saturday from 22.00 to 6.00. The Retro Club Gramophone has recently been refurbished. Now inside, in a dark and retro style with large angel wings on the walls and dramatic lighting, it hosts the best DJs of the moment who play mainly dance music. The Gramophone club is open from 10pm but the club starts to get crowded after midnight. Culture Beat is one of my recent discoveries with really awesome music, as well as location (it is inside the National Palace of Culture) and has an amazing view towards Vitosha. One of my personal favourites is The Cocktail Bar. Untypically of a European capital, Sofia is a really safe place. Tourists often share it’s the safest city they’ve ever been to, both in the daytime and at night.
It is a small place and always very crowded, so if you want to sit at the table, you should book in advance. Themed parties are often organized here with the best Bulgarian djs and pop stars as guests. Students’ town is probably the youngest-populated part of Bulgaria, as it’s home to several of the biggest Sofia universities and where most of the students from out of town live. Sofia has the staggering 25 universities which explains all those young people (including foreign students) in “Studentski” and its buzzing nightlife. Students’ town is Sofia’s own Vice City - it’s practically just bars and nightclubs and some blocks in between for their patrons to get some sleep in between parties. Most restaurants, bars and clubs in Sofia are open every night of the week.

Yalta is the oldest nightclub in the city and one of the best in Sofia . Ranked by DJ Mag as one of the 100 best clubs in the world and renovated in 2005, it hosts internationally renowned DJs every weekend. Yalta is a modern and original Bulgarian club, and it was one of the first clubs to open in Bulgaria.
It is popular with purists for its live music and especially its Sunday jam sessions, which are a real local legend. Students’ town is also the place to go if you want to listen to “chalga” - Bulgaria’s characteristic mix of pop, folk and Oriental music. Chalga parties are famous for their hedonistic, YOLO atmosphere, often crossing the fine line between having a good time and taking things too far. Clubbing has always had an element of escapism to it but that’s even more pronounced in the Balkans and especially in chalga clubs. You have to see it to decide if it’s your thing or not but it can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Maymunarnika only works during the summer and attracts young people aged 20 to 30. The place is extremely spartan and simple, and consists of a huge bar, a stage and some makeshift seating scattered under the trees. The place has a long history of parties and concerts, which are still very popular with young people in Sofia today.
Tipping is common in Bulgaria in restaurants, bars and nightclubs, as service is not included in the price. Not leaving a tip would mean you’re unhappy with the service. To spare you the math, just add 10% to your bill and you’ll be fine.
In addition to the city center, nightlife is also alive in the student district, Studentski Grad , the area where Sofia's 16 universities are located. Here, in the midst of anonymous Soviet-style buildings, some of the biggest clubs in Sofia , frequented by many young people. The 2024 Lombard's Cruise Nights and Summer Concert series will mark the 25th anniversary of this renowned event! So, to experience the chalga-frenzy you have two options. It was recently renewed so now the interior is pretty nice, alcohol is well-priced and the crowd is pretty diverse. Every fall, for 3 straight nights, Sofia hosts the international “A to Jazz Festival” which brings some of the biggest jazz names in the world.

But you haven’t really seen Sofia until you’ve tasted its nightlife. Sense Hotel Rooftop Bar (boulevard Tzar Osvoboditel 16, Sofia) Open every day from 10.00 to 2.00. The Sense Hotel Rooftop Bar is located on the ninth floor of the hotel and from here you can enjoy a unique view over the city of Sofia. Smoking is allowed in the bar so if you are a non-smoker you may find it annoying.
Nightclubs have a coat check to store your jacket in the winter. They might charge you 1 BGN for it, so bring some coins. The popular Cruise Nights and Summer Concert Series is returning to downtown Lombard for its 23rd season, beginning June 18.
The club's founders have the ambition to make it the largest live music club in Bulgaria. Admission costs from 10 to 30 BLV (about 5-15 euros). Both promise an unforgettable night, each in their own way. Both have their bars, their nightclubs and their street food. As they’re pretty far from each other, we suggest you stick to one or the other in a single night. Unlike other cities, Sunday is not the day to go partying in Sofia.
